One of the most common questions before buying an electric go-kart is: “How long will the battery last on a single charge?”
The answer depends on the battery capacity, motor power, kart weight, track layout and driving style.
A Simple Example
Consider a go-kart with:
Battery: 60V 45Ah
Motor: 2.2 kW
The battery capacity is:
60V × 45Ah = 2,700 Wh (2.7 kWh)
At a continuous motor load of 2.2 kW:
2.7 ÷ 2.2 ≈ 1.2 hours
So, the theoretical runtime is around 74 minutes.
Real-world estimate
Driving condition Approx. average draw Estimated runtime
Full/near-full throttle 2.2 kW ~60–70 min
Normal track driving 1.2–1.6 kW ~1.5–2 hours
Moderate/light driving 0.8–1.0 kW ~2.5–3 hours
However, a kart rarely runs continuously at its maximum rated power. Acceleration, braking, corners, driver weight and track conditions all affect energy consumption.
So, actual runtime can vary significantly from the theoretical figure.
What Determines Battery Runtime?
Battery capacity – Higher Ah means more stored energy.
Motor power – Higher power consumption can reduce runtime.
Driving style – Aggressive acceleration uses more energy.
Track conditions – Frequent acceleration and braking increase consumption.
Load – Driver and kart weight affect energy usage.
What About Battery Lifespan?
Runtime per charge and battery lifespan are two different things. How many years a battery lasts depends on its chemistry, charging habits, usage and operating conditions.
So, when choosing an electric go-kart, don't look at battery capacity alone. The battery, motor and kart should be matched to your specific application.
